Dearest David, You are 1!

Dearest David,

Oh Buddy, how are you already 1 year old?! It's amazing that time can go so fast, yet so slow! All those nights from months 4 to 9 where we dealt with your poor sleeping habits went soooo slow, yet it seems like a lifetime ago when we weren't getting a good night's sleep. Though it seems like yesterday when we were anxiously awaiting the arrival of you and your sister!

Mr. David, you are such a squishy little bug! You love to be held and when we carry you, you hold on tight to the back of our arm and wrap your legs around our body. And God forbid we try to put you down...you just hold on tighter! I'm kind of glad that one of our three babies likes to be cuddled, snuggled, and hugged. Though, there are times when holding you just isn't feasible (like if I'm making dinner or I need to give undivided attention to Lucas or Claire), and you will just cry at my feet or try to climb up my leg to show your want to be held. There are also the times when I have to leave the room and you come crawling after me whining or crying. These instances happen frequently, but not all the time.

You also love to climb! We have watched you get on top of the train table, ottoman and the toy box. I'm sure the couch is not too far off. You are excellent at climbing the stairs, and this month, you learned how to climb down them on your belly! You also got very good at turning around to get down the one step from the kitchen to the breakfast room.

This month, you also took your first steps, David! You are still quite wobbly and don't have very good balance when you let go of whatever your holding on to, but you can take about 3 or 4 steps before falling over and crawling to your destination. You have no fear whatsoever, and basically just let go and attempt to stay upright. I'm sure you'll make lots of progress this month!

I'm not sure you have any words yet, but you say something that sounds like "hi" and you say the word "mama" - the jury's still out with whether you are referring to me or not. You babble a ton, though! You also know the signs for "more" (though, you don't really use it correctly), and "all done" (which you do use correctly!). You can also nod your head for "yes" when I say the word "yes" to you and shake it for "no" which many times you use correctly. Lovely!

Oh and when we ask you how old you are, you put up one finger!

This month, you finally started clapping when you are happy, when you hear music or just on command when we ask you to clap. It's super cute and you get very excited while clapping!

Playing peek-a-boo with you is super fun! You will use a bib, blanket or towel to cover your face and then get really excited when you pop out!

You like to kiss the baby doll that Lucas named "Claire". You get super excited when Scout the dog starts singing. And you like to drop shapes in the shape-sorter bucket (without the top on). You've also started to show an interest in books! You will sit with books and flip through the pages. As for sitting still and listening to a book being read to you, we are still working on that (you get read to every night at the very least), but the "lift the flap" books or the books with the little animal that we stick our finger in and move around are always a hit!

You love to eat everything you are given and you get very upset when your tray doesn't have food on it, unless you are "all done".

You've been sleeping very, very well, and gone are the days when we have to sleep with our fan on the highest setting so as not to wake ourselves up when you cry out in the middle of the night (you never usually needed help, but just would cry for a couple of seconds and go right back to sleep on your own. Those few seconds were enough to wake mommy up, though). And you wake up so happy in the morning and after naps. You are so quiet and just chat to yourself until someone comes to get you - and then you just grin from behind our paci and bounce when you first see mommy or daddy.

We've been working hard on making the transition from formula in a bottle to whole milk in a cup. We've dealt with some spitting out and a fair amount of crying whenever you saw a cup come out instead of a bottle, but we have pushed through! As of now, three of your four bottles a day have been replaced with a sippy cup. During the transition, your cups or bottles were filled with a formula/milk cocktail, but you have no problem drinking cold milk straight. We just finished our very last container of formula powder, so it's all milk from here on out! I presume we will be bottle-free in the next week or so!

You and your sister love to play together and when I say "together", I mean you love to take toys from her and make her cry or you love to pull up on her or wrestle with her to make her cry. All the while, you are laughing, David! You both do enjoy laughing and talking in your own language to each other, so it's not all about tormenting and instigating!

At 1 year old, you are 31" tall (87%ile), weigh 20lbs 12oz (42%ile), and your head is 40%ile. You wear 12-18 month clothes, size 5.5 shoes, and size 4 diapers.

David, you are such a little mush! We think you are going to be the clown in our family! You have brought so much happiness into our lives over the last year! Continue being you - we can't wait to see what life has on store for you! We love you!
