Music is still one of his main loves - he is really enjoying this next session of Kids MusicRound and the new songs. For part of his birthday present, Eric and I bought him some of the instruments he enjoys from class. He loves to pass them out when we have our nightly dance parties :) The tambourine is his favorite because he enjoys being like Miss Andrea when she sings the opening "Hello Song." He also loves to play his "tar" (guitar) from Uncle Craig. Lucas is an awesome dancer, and you can't help but want to dance along with him when he busts a move!
This little boy is just so, so smart. The things he knows and notices astounds us every day. Words that we never formally taught him, he will blurt out to identify objects in a book or in life. Or if you point out and ask, "what's this?" or "where is (insert object)?", more often than not, he gets it right. I can only assume that our narrations and extensive book-reading over the last 2 years are the reason he knows SO MUCH.
He is also SO observant. He always notices when things are out of place by telling us "uh-oh!" I put out Christmas decorations over a few days while Lucas took his nap, and he always noticed and pointed out each piece of the new decor once he woke up!
Lucas has become quite the talker. He has such a large vocabulary! Some things that he says come out of his mouth as clear as day, but others need a Lucas translator to figure it out! He is quite patient, though, as we guess word after word that "sound like" what he is saying, until we get it right. He repeats everything - especially expressions of surprise. He now almost always uses his words to ask for items. It is so fun to be able to have little conversations with him. He's pretty hilarious!
Here are some short phrases that he says regularly;
"mama/dada/doe-doe where are you?"
"Hi Coco", "hi Davey", "hi big guy",
"bad darby", "bad girl"
"I love you",
"thank you": seriously adorable especially when he is giving something TO us and thanks us ;)
"No way!", (different than "no", this is pretty funny but we have to try not to laugh at his sass!)
"Go, go, go" or "go away": when he wants you to leave him alone.
"Thank you, I'm done". While handing me your half-eaten plate of food.
"Ba-bye": his answer when you ask him where someone/something is and it's not there
"Excuse me" (pronounced me-me): when he passes gas - haha!
"Pepe" = Santa
"Ap-pa-ple"= pineapple
"El-la-la" = elephant
"Ha-cop-cop" = helicopter
"Abalance" = ambulance
"Ohna" = orange
He calls Claire "Coco" but only when saying hi to her or looking for her. Kind of like his term of endearment for her. "Hi Coco" or "Coco, where are you?" Otherwise it's "Clar".
God blesses Elmo, choo choo, trucks and lists everyone he knows in our nightly prayers. Also includes dogs Darby, Cassie and Riley.
Lucas is excellent with identifying colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, white, brown, and black. He even understands that colors have different shades. If there are several of the same item grouped together, he will identify which one he wants by stating its color (ie salad dressings are all "dips" but he will tell us he wants the one with the purple label). He has a small obsession with the color yellow. Lucas always wants to use his yellow plate and bowl. We love to hear him say "lellow", so this is a welcomed phase.
He has a word for everything and everyone he encounters. He can name fruits and vegetables, transportation vehicles (car, truck, trash truck, train, ambulance, helicopter, airplane boat, etc), construction vehicles, musical instruments, animals (both sounds they make and their name), and a few shapes.
We are still working on counting and reciting the ABCs. He is SO interested in both and spends time each day playing with 2 apps on our iPad that are great for learning letters: Elmo's ABCs and Dora's Skywriting ABCs. He also loves his Leap Frog fridge toy that teaches ABCs. Lucas is becoming quite good at telling us what letter is what when he sees them in books and on signs. He can identify more than half of the letters in alphabet.
Lucas loves his baby sister and brother. He is extremely protective of Claire. He hates to see her cry and will try to soothe her by saying "shhh" while gently patting her head and popping her paci in her mouth. He likes to hold their hands and pat their bellies. He will cover both David and Claire with blankets. Lucas is very particular about keeping the babies in their own bouncy chairs, carseats and with their own blankets. When he sees us vary from the norm (ie grabbing David's blue blanket for Claire since it's in closer reach, or putting David in the pink/brown bouncy because his is in another room), Lucas will try to fix it or tell us that we're wrong ;)
It is such a privilege to be Lucas' mom and dad! He just makes our life so much richer and bright, fills it with so much laughter, and reminds us what it's like to be young again! Eric and I feel so blessed to have been given such a wonderful and amazing gift. We cannot imagine life without him!
